Chapter Thirteen

After they’d changed into their uniforms and ensured the salt gun was properly filled, Lucas pocketed extra salt packets while Abby opened a box of candy hearts.

“Those things don’t have much salt,” Lucas pointed out.

“I know, but they’re delicious.” Abby popped one into her mouth. Lucas shook his head, but he was reaching for the box to take a handful himself. She let him, before shoving open the hall door and starting down the creaking stairs.

Abby tried to keep her attention focused on the task at hand, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Mina. As much as she told herself it was good for Mina to get out and spend some time with Michelle while Abby could focus on wrapping up this haunting, she felt a twinge of guilt accompanied by fear. Had she hurt Mina’s feelings? Was Mina growing impatient?

“Are we actually going to write a story on Matilda?” Lucas asked from behind her.

Abby shook her head, attempting to clear her thoughts of Mina. The faster they calmed Matilda down, the faster she would get to talk to Mina again and set everything straight. “Sure, if that’s what it takes to get her to stop hurting people.”

“I take it I’ll be the one writing it?”

“If you’re offering.” Abby stopped outside of Magnolia and knocked on the door. “Between the two of us, you’re the better writer, after all.”

“I write fanfiction, not news—”

The door opened and a thin blonde woman with a flowy blouse and long beaded jewelry stepped out. For a second, Abby thought she was seeing a ghost with her own eyes, but she quickly realized the woman was merely wearing pale foundation and exceptionally red lipstick.

“Dr. Greenwood,” Lucas stammered, stepping beside Abby as if this was some once-in-a-lifetime celebrity meet and greet. “H-Hi. I—”

“I will not be needing housekeeping.” Dr. Greenwood placed a ‘do not disturb’ sign on her door before shutting it in their faces.

Abby raised her fist to knock again.

Lucas caught her arm, guiding her forcefully away.

“Hey,” Abby protested. “We need that room.”

“You heard Dr. Greenwood.” He pointed at the sign and held a finger to his lips.

“Yeah, I heard her being rude. But she’s clearly awake and we’ve already disturbed her, so once we tell her that we aren’t here to clean her room—we just want to talk to the ghost that’s haunting it—she’ll let us in.”

“Or she’ll get us fired. Nathan said we aren’t supposed to bother the guests.”

“But—”

“We’re going to have to find some other way to reach Matilda. Maybe we can get her to come out here for her interview?”

Abby chewed her lip. It was worth a shot. She turned on the walkie-talkie at her hip and raised the binoculars.

“Matilda! If you can hear me, we want to talk to you.”

“No need to shout,” Lucas whispered, pointing once again to the ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door to Magnolia.

Abby rolled her eyes and continued, lowering her voice only slightly—the ghost still needed to hear her through the walls, after all.
